This Dharma Talk, or teisho, was given by Sekkei Harada Roshi at

Hosshin-ji in Japan in 1992. The teisho is I think an important guide

for those who are practicing zazen and seeking real clarity in their lives.

The teisho is roughly translated here into English. There are bound to be

mistakes in the translation, but perhaps it can illuminate aspects of Zen practice

which will encourage practitioners to continue practicing wholeheartedly.

Sandokai [Merging of Difference and Equality]

The Merging of Difference and Equality is the teaching in the form of a poem composed of 220 characters by an ancient patriarch skillfully and impartially expounding the essence of the Buddha Dharma, and the unique transmission outside the sutras, independent of words and letters, of the Mind of the Great Sage from the viewpoint of the two opposing aspects of equality (self - interdependency - darkness) and discrimination (Law - non-dependence - light).

Preface

The Merging of Difference and Equality was written by Sekito Kisen, the 7th patriarch after Bodhidharma.

He is the only descendent of Seigen Gyoshi, the deshi of Daikan Eno.

Sekito Kisen became the disciple of Rokuso Eno at an early age. But shortly before Eno's passing to Nirvana, Kisen asked him who would be his master when Eno leaves this world.

Eno told him to think hard about it.

Hearing that, Sekito Kisen found a quiet, deserted place and sat wholeheartedly forgetting everything.

One could say without stretching the truth that his condition, or state of affairs is the same as Dying the Great Death, and of dropping off mind and body.

One day an older brother disciple said to Sekito Kisen, when Daikan Eno said to you to think hard about it, he meant that you should inquire and continue to practice under Seigen Gyoshi.

Listening to the advice of his brother disciple, he returned to Sokei, the original dwelling place of the sixth patriarch, where he trained under the sixth patriarch's disciple Seigan Gyoshi. And within a very short while he awakened giving personal evidence of dropping off mind and body.

Daikan Eno, the 6th Patriarch, had two distinguished disciples, Nangaku Ejo and Seigen Gyoshi. Under Nangaku Ejo there were Baso Doitsu, Hyakujo Ekai, Obaku Kiun, and Rinzai Gigen. All inherited the Buddha Dharma, and this line was the birth of the Rinzai sect. Under Seigen Gyoshi were Sekito Kisen, Ungan Donjo, and Tozan Ryokai who all succeeded the Dharma of the great sage Shakamuni Buddha. This was the beginning of the Soto sect.

If Sekito Kisen had not inherited the Dharma from Seigan Gyoshi, the Soto sect would have died out.

It is the Dharma itself that transmits the Dharma. We must carefully understand that it is not the person that transmits it.

It is said that the Sandokai is the headwater, the source or origin of what we call Zen.

This is why we study it, investigate it thoroughly; by inquiring into it exhaustively we should believe that it is possible to clearly grasp the essence of the entire Shobogenzo.

In the practice of the Way there is no separation or distinction between shikantaza of the Soto sect and koan investigation of the Rinzai school. But as a temporary expedient or device, for a while for the sake of guiding others, distinctions such as equality and discrimination, theoretical understanding and implementation, zenki and zenri, practice and enlightenment are erected.

Zenki is, for example, is Great Function, the actions of the ancient masters/patriarchs as found in the Mumonkan or Blue Cliff Record that created the connection, link, or circumstances inducing their disciple to great enlightenment. And Zenri, the underlying principle or truth of that awakening.

If one does not personally clarify zenki and zenri, if this is not reflected in the course of his/her everyday life, function and actions, then Zen becomes like a drooping, withering tree, a pointless effort, a waste of time.

Sandokai is the skin and flesh, the bones and marrow of Sekito Kisen, a major barrier or gate that we cannot ignore nor neglect.

The Merging of Difference and Equality

The mind of the great sage of India

Is intimately transmitted from west to east.

While human faculties are sharp or dull,

The Way has no northern or southern ancestors.

The spiritual source shines clear in the light;

The branching streams flow on in the dark.

Grasping at things is surely delusion;

According with sameness is still not enlightenment.

All the objects of the senses

Interact and yet do not.

Interacting brings involvement.

Otherwise, each keeps its place

Sights vary in quality and form,

Sounds differ as pleasing or harsh.

Refined and common speech come together in the dark,

Clear and murky phrases are distinguished in the light.

The four elements return to their natures

Just as a child turns to its mother;

Fire heats, wind moves,

Water wets, earth is solid.

Eye and sights, ear and sounds,

Nose and smells, tongue and tastes;

Thus with each and every thing,

Depending on these roots, the leaves spread forth.

Trunk and branches share the essence;

Revered and common, each has its speech.

In the light there is darkness,

But don’t take it as darkness;

In the dark there is light,

But don’t see it as light.

Light and dark oppose one another

Like the front and back foot in walking.

Each of the myriad things has its merit,

Expressed according to function and place.

Phenomena exist; box and lid fit.

Principle responds; arrowpoints meet.

Hearing the words, understand the meaning;

Don’t set up standards of your own.

If you don’t understand the Way right before you,

How will you know the path as you walk?

Progress is not a matter of far or near,

But if you are confused, mountains and rivers block your way.

I respectfully urge you who study the mystery,

Do not pass your days and nights in vain.

Lecture 1 A Commentary on Sandokai

October 6, 1992

In the last talk I began to introduce the Sandokai, but before getting into the text I would like to talk a little bit about what is the Buddha Dharma.

The founder of Eihei-ji, Dogen Zenji, said in Bendowa, "Through the practice of Zen one awakens to the Great Way of the Buddhas and Patriarchs."

It only depends on whether you have the aspiration or not; it matters not whether you are a layman or priest.

Those who are able to discern between the shallow and the profound will naturally believe in the Way.

Moreover, those who think that the affairs of the secular world obstruct/hinder the world of the Dharma only know there is no Buddha Dharma in the regular world; they do not yet realize that within the Dharma nothing secular/profane can be perceived.

"One awakens to the Great Way of the Buddhas and Patriarchs", in other words, dropping of body and mind, or enlightenment, is independent of being a layman or monk; it only depends on one's aspiration to realize it.

It is easy to think "the affairs of the secular world obstruct/hinder the world of the Dharma" -- for laypeople, folks not living in a temple, folks of the regular world it is much more difficult to seek the Buddha Dharma.

Hinder or obstruct here means the various obstacles that distract us from exclusively devoting ourselves to the practice of the Way.

At times when distracted, someone might chant the name of Namu Amida Butsu, or simply endeavoring wholeheartedly in investigating one's present condition, in other words, the genjo koan.

In any case, in the regular world it is difficult to maintain the way-seeking mind. Therefore many people end up thinking that the Buddha dharma cannot be found in regular life.

Some people believe that the Buddha Dharma cannot be found in the mundane world, but they don't know that both the Buddha Dharma and the ways of the (mundane) world, as they are, are the world of the Dharma.

In other words, drawing a line between the Buddha Dharma and worldly ways is impossible.

Everything that is true/real in the regular world is no less real/true in the Buddha Dharma.

Therefore to whole-heartedly endeavor in the regular world is to do the same in the world of the Dharma.

For example, a person doing zazen may appear to be endeavoring or adhering to the Way, but actually is not.

One can say such a (form of a) person is neither true to the ways of the world nor true to the Buddha Dharma.

Here a large number of both ordained monks and laypeople come to practice.

Thse is due to the aspiration of those who want to practice the Way: not because of their standing as a monk or layperson.

Originally, the monastery was a place for monks to practice.

And, still, these days there are many places like that.

However, there are fewer and fewer monks seeking the Way these days. And here both monks and laypeople are permitted to sit in the zendo and practice wholeheartedly.

Here during sesshin I would like the laypeople to forget their work or jobs and endeavor wholeheartedly in zazen, in the same way they endeavor in their work.

It would be a mistake to think that one does zazen in order to aid them in their regular jobs.

There are men and women fervently, fiercely fighting for survival in their daily lives, genuinely confronting the problem of life and death. This can also be called zazen.

These days the problem of life and death does not seem to draw much attention, but when people are pressed or probed a bit more deeply,  in the end it is this problem of life and death that ultimately arises

This is because for as long as man has been around we have been vexed by the 4 sufferings of birth, old age, sickness, and death, by impermanence, and lately by such things as discrimination and human rights.

And in the end it all boils down to this matter of life or death.

And, the practice of zazen is to resolve this matter of life and death at its very foundation.

It is a matter that just cannot be resolved through a half-hearted effort.

This is why it is reasonable to say that one who is devoted in the ways of the regular world is also devoted in the Buddha Dharma.

Here in the monastery we chant the Sandokai, or The Merging of Difference and Equality, every morning. This is the work of Sekito Kisen Zenji.

The length of the Hannya Shingyo that you all know is 274 ji, or Japanese characters;

In comparison, the length of the Sandokai is just 223 characters long. Although it is very short, it still expresses the essence of the Buddha Dharma.

And unique to the Sandokai is that although other sutras are based on the viewpoint of the dharma alone, the Sandokai is based on both the Buddha Dharma and that of man.

Why did Sekito Kisen leave the Sandokai for later generations? Briefly speaking, Bodhidharma was Zen's first Chinese patriarch. He was followed by Taiso Eka, Kanchi Sosan, Daihi Doshin, Daiman Konin. Then the fifth patriarch Konin had two disciples, Daikan Eno and Jinshu Joza.

Later, the lineage from Jinshu Joza became the northern school of Zen, and the lineage of Roanja (later to be named the 6th Patriarch Daikan Eno) became the southern school of Zen.

The teaching of the northern school was to separate cause and effect (practice and enlightenment), devote oneself to practice for long years, and to gradually wear away one's desires and attachments. Thereby reaching the Way.

In other words, to constantly perceive or erect the mirror, or the tree of enlightenment, and ceaselessly keep wiping the mirror clean so it doesn't fog up, or always shedding light on the tree and fertilizing it to foster its growth.

In contrast to the northern school, there was Daikan Eno who was succeeded by Nangaku Ejo, Seigen Gyoshi. Ejo Zenji's lineage formed the Rinzai school, and Seigen Gyoshi the Soto School.

It was the successor to Gyoshi, Sekito Kisen, Zenji, who produced this text Sandokai.

Sekito Kisens roots are in the Southern School, which demonstrated that the outcome or goal of practice is not somewhere separate from ones present condition.

Without using any means or method to practice or cultivate oneself in some way, when you sit zazen you are already enlightened. This is the teaching of the Sudden School.

In this way the conflicting points of view of the Northern and Southern Schools raise a great commotion. But originally from the point of view of the Dharma as it is, there can be no conflict.

And Sekito Kisen demonstrates in the Sandokai the true nature of Dharma how it must be.

The Sandokai was written in around the year 742 AD, or during the reign of Emperor Shomu in Japan. Incidentally, both Kobo Daishi and Saicho Shonin are said to have studied/apprenticed under Norther School teachers.

In any case, before Shakyamuni Buddha there was no one who had ever demonstrated or expounded the true nature of the universe.

It was Shakyamuni Buddha who the first person to awaken to, to give actual proof to the fact that everything in the universe behaves according to natural principles or laws.

Therefore it is a mistake to think that because Shakyamuni awakened to this reality that he was the first person to establish, compose, or put together, or create the Buddha Dharma.

This original natural law or principle is what ones true form or nature is.

And Buddha gave actual proof to the truth that he himself too is fundamental law as it is. In other words, the original dharma.

Therefore, even though we have a word for the dharma, or fundamental law, it cannot be seen (is unperceivable by the senses).

In other words, its true form or nature is no-form/no-nature.

Currently, there are those who assert that some(thing) constant called the Dharma, or fundamental law, does originally exist. This has led to much controversy. But the Buddha, in order for sentient beings to realize that they are also the dharma itself, erected or formulated what we refer to as the teaching of the Dharma.

The Buddha Way, then, is the Dharma of Shakyamuni Buddha.

Therefore, Buddhist practice or Buddhist study is not to walk in the footsteps along the same path that Shakyamuni walked.

Nor is it to follow the teaching of the great ancestors who proceeded the Buddha.

Buddhist practice is to awaken to the Dharma of each of us as we are.

If we ourselves as we are were not the Buddha Way, then even though we are already complete and free as we are, we constantly seek for something else something found in the teaching or the sutras and wondering if you yourself can become like Buddha or become like Bodhidharma.

You delude yourself wondering if we can become like Dogen Zenji or Sekito Kisen Zenji. Then looking at yourself you conclude that its impossible and even give up the aspiration to awaken to the Way. Occasionally I have seen or heard this happening.

But by realizing that the Buddha Way is none other than ones own path, and by continuing the practice according to the teaching

We realize, give actual proof that the Dharma as demonstrated from the teaching of the Buddhas and patriarchs is the same as the Dharma of we ourselves.

This is why we do Zen practice, do sesshin.

These days in the fields of science and physics scientists do research into the true nature or essence of things, of the universe.

But, in the end it is impossible to grasp or perceive the true nature of a thing.

Things appear, or come together, according to various cause and effect circumstances.

And therefore have no true nature or substantiality of their own.

Researchers discuss and debate what and why.

But in the world of science, research is based on substantiated fact.

This can also be said about emptiness and nothingness as elucidated, clarified in Buddhism.

Originally speaking, this can be no such thing we call emptiness, or nothingness, or the void.

But in order guide sentient beings along the Buddha Way, Buddha used expedient devices such as emptiness and nothingness. Just like in the ancient parable where the guide/leader of a caravan on an arduous, treacherous journey through the desert produces through supernatural powers a phantom castle, a mirage, along the way, somehow giving hope to his followers to continue their journey to their destination.

And so it is to come to realize or know that everything arises due to cause and effect nothing is substantial, nothing has a center or core (egoself) and that waking up to this one finds that things like the Way, or Dharma, or Zen practice were unnecessary from the beginning.

This is like the allegory of the mikoshi, or portable shrine or parade float.

During the festival the people carry the shrine on their shoulders dancing and shouting WASHOI WASHOI (Yo-heave-ho!).

But after the festival is over, no one just leaves the portable float sitting in front of the village shrine forever in the middle of town.

It will surely be put away in its proper place.

In our practice, too, we shoulder our practice and carry it around exhorting, Yo-heave-ho! (Push yourself !).

Its time for sesshin/retreat (Push yourself !), Its time for takuhatsu (monks begging) (Push yourself !). We might feel like we must constantly keep our practice in mind

But, once youve completed practice, you realize its not needed to keep it with oneself.

The true nature of all things is non-substantiality, or, no true nature of its own; it is no self, no center. If this isnt set clearly as the purpose of our practice, our goal can become blurred and we become lost.

Please keep the goal of practice clearly settled in front of you.

This brings up another point, that is, about the teaching that one should not sit with any objective or purpose in mind. In other words, to give up the seeking mind. Many people are confused about this teaching.

Giving up the seeking mind is to see that oneself must give actual proof through practice to the fact that all things have no self-nature, center, or true nature of their own. As opposed to someone who simply believes it based on intellectual or conceptual understanding.

These two standpoints concerning non-seeking are worlds apart, and to be mistaken here can confuse us concerning why we do practice.

These days people dont accept things at face value. One has to show proof. And so it is not easy for some people to accept Bodhidharmas A teaching not based on words and letters; a transmission outside the sutras..

It has come to the point where sometimes a teacher must go to extremes, saying things such as the Buddha Way is delusional thinking, it is discriminatory thinking before some people accept or are persuaded or convinced.

And a skillful teacher by using a device such as the so-called delusion of the Buddhadharma, by means of becoming one with that delusion a practitioner can be lead to awakening to true nature is no nature.

In a sutra called the Fugenkyo or Samantabhadra, The Repentence Sutra, which is part of the Three Fold Lotus Sutra, Sūtra of Meditation on the Bodhisattva Universal Virtue, it is written: If one wants to repent, they should sit upright and ponder one true nature.

People's sins are innumerable obstacles caused by the actions of our six sense doors of eyes, ears, nose, body, mouth, and mind, which disperse and scatter on ones life like falling dew or frost. However, just as the frost and dew disappear, as soon as the sun rises and shines, all obstacles disappear like frost and dew according to true Buddhist law.

What this says is that the Buddha Way both begins and ends with repentance.

So that the act of doing zazen itself is the form of complete repentance, of having repented all.

It is saying that zazen is the practice of the Buddhas; only Buddhas can do zazen.

Buddha is someone who has thrown away the standpoint of the ego self.

It can be said that truly doing zazen is the Buddhas practice of having dropped off any ideas of self and other.

If a person wishes to repent, this doesn't mean a person wishes to repent what is regarded as the bad things he/she has done in the past

One repents both the bad and good things they did.

If both are not repented, then it is not what is called real/true form of genuine repentance.

If one really thinks about from where does good and bad arise, you can immediately understand.

If someone repents only the evil deeds, and leaves the good deeds as they are,

Since good and bad exist in contrast/ comparison to each other, if one side is extinguished or eliminated, then its opposite will naturally be extinguished at the same time.

It is impossible to repent the evil deeds to leave only acts of goods to remain.

If one is mistaken about this, it would mean only repenting evil, which from the standpoint of true nature is no nature, the essence of no-nature is lost.

The outcome of that being, "If one wants to repent, they should sit upright and consider their true nature." Buddha said to sit upright, and here is an important point, where one may tend to think that this means to continue sitting doing zazen until perhaps the end of time, or until your legs drop off.

Here, one tends to think that tanza, or sitting upright, and true form (true nature) are two different things, but we must come to realize that sitting upright itself, as it is, is none other than what true form/nature is.

The evil deeds of sentient beings are like dew and frost.

Repentance is to purify with the light of wisdom and compassion.

In Buddhism, the meaning of extinguish or disappear is to assimilate with or become one with the thing.

Buddha said heaven and earth and I are the same source. So, where would you discard or throw something away?

To merge, assimilate, or melt together, in other words to become one with the thing. It doesn't mean the thing disappears or vanishes.

To become one with the thing itself, just like the frost and dew disappears underneath the light of the sun, this is the meaning of "disappearing in the light of wisdom."

And so, to say I dropped off the ego through Zen practice, or through deep practice I experienced emptiness, but these are a mistake. From the beginning, only there is only emptiness.

Emptiness is not something disappearing or becomes empty at some point in time due to some cause-and-effect circumstances

It is the condition of all things now; all dharmas, distinguishable as they are, but at the same time, empty, no self-nature.

And although empty and without permanent nature, still appearing in their present form according to manifold circumstances.

In the prātimoksa,

This is liberation of each dharma.

Buddhism explains that while dharma, all things, do manifest (are perceived by the senses), at the same time they are emptiness itself.

In this way, while Buddha and the ancient masters expounded the teaching, if the teaching is regarded as the truth or reality itself, it leads to unfortunate results. Much toil and trouble that shows little or no results

Even making strenuous efforts, in the end one doesn't reach the ultimate goal of realizing the true nature of things.

Therefore it is necessary to understand and grasp the theory or principles of the teaching and then to practice wholeheartedly.
